Envalior

Battery System

Battery systems rely on electrically non-conductive materials for optimal performance. Our high-performance plastics ensure safety, enhance functionality, and reduce weight and costs. We provide tailor-made solutions to meet the unique requirements of every application.

Immersion cooling with dielectric fluids and plastic components

Every battery system requires reliable thermal management to maximize efficiency and longevity. Dielectric fluids offer the most effective temperature control by fully immersing the cells in electrically non-conductive liquid, making them especially ideal for round cells. At Envalior, we’ve rigorously tested various grades with different dielectric fluids to ensure optimal compatibility, preserving plastic integrity and preventing fluid contamination from leaching. Typical applications include round cell holders, bus bars, and structural elements designed to protect cells in case of impact.

Compatibility of plastics with dielectric fluids at specified temperatures and durations

Plastics for electrical components within the battery

Plastics are essential as electrical insulators, making them ideal for high-voltage battery applications where resistance to short-term high temperatures from arc events is crucial. Envalior provides a diverse range of customized plastics engineered to meet these rigorous demands.

Flame-retardant PBTs and PBT blends are preferred for dimensionally critical components like pouch cell frames and round cell carriers. For overmolded busbars, PA6 or PA66 with varied glass fiber content and FR additives are employed to withstand thermal shock. Thermally conductive grades further enhance performance by promoting even temperature distribution and reducing peak temperatures in sensitive components.

  • Decrease risk of battery housing fires when using our Tepex® composite, a lightweight sustainable material

The materials used to make EV battery housings play a key role in passenger safety. To focus on safety and performance of EVs, engineers need to use a material that enhances the thermal stability of batteries, prevents thermal runaway, and mitigates the risk of fire or explosion. At Envalior, we tested a new composite under our Tepex® brand, which is ideal for components inside an EV battery.

  • Decrease EV battery damage risks when using Pocan®AF4130, a flame retardant PBT+ASA grade

Engineering thermoplastics like PBT and PBT blends have potential for applications in the EV battery sector. Although PBT has been widely utilized in electrical and electronic automotive components, it may be challenging to find a material specifically for battery components. Certain requirements must be met, and so Envalior and Hella tailormade a material for BMU and CMU housings that is resistance to heat and chemicals.

  • Innovative Materials for Lightweight EV Battery Enclosures

As the electric vehicle (EV) share of the automobile market continues to grow, the new means of propulsion has created the need to take a fresh look at automotive design, engineering and manufacturing. The automobile industry is demanding lighter, stronger and safer products, and Envalior engineering materials experts are meeting those demands with innovative new materials.
