A wide portfolio of Arnite is available, including unreinforced, reinforced and flame retardant grades.

Arnite® PET & PBT — high-performance engineering plastics that combine high strength and rigidity with excellent processing characteristics

With excellent flow and mechanical properties, plus excellent processing characteristics, Arnite PET & PBT are applicable in high precision components for many industries. Both polyethylene terephthalate and polybutylene terephthalate are hydrolysis resistant—they are dried prior to injection molding. Yet, PET requires an even lower moisture content than PBT. Arnite has exceptional dimensional stability and high strength and stiffness at ambient conditions because of low moisture absorption.

In the automotive industry, many applications are located in high humidity and heat environments.  Thus, hydrolysis and heat resistance is very important. For applications such as connectors, sensors and control devices, manufacturers need materials they can rely upon to resist hydrolysis in these demanding environments, and you can look to the HR-PBT portfolio of material solutions to deliver exceptional hydrolysis resistance.

By avoiding possible corrosion problems with metallic contacts, Arnite PBT achieves excellent high-temperature performance without the need for heat stabilizers. Plus, it’s very low moisture absorption ensures high dimensional stability for safe and reliable parts.

In addition to excellent mechanical properties, Arnite PET & PBT deliver a cost-effective material with swift processing times and global security of supply. Arnite HR-PBT portfolio addresses even more stringent testing validations as the trend towards electric-powered and autonomous road vehicles increases.

FAQs

What does PBT stand for?

PBT is the acronym that stands for polybutylene terephthalate (PBT).

What is PBT material?

PBT is the second most important commercial polyester. It is a semi-aromatic thermoplastic that can be easily molded and thermoformed. Depending on the cooling rate and molding process, it is either amorphous or semi-crystalline. PBT has many beneficial properties, such as high strength and toughness, good abrasion and heat resistance, low creep at elevated temperatures, good chemical resistance, and excellent dimensional stability, especially when glass-fiber reinforced.

What is PBT plastic used for?

PBT is used in electrical and automotive applications, including plug connectors, relays, keyboards, switches, distribution boxes, and more.

Is PBT plastic safe?

Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT), a high-performance thermoplastic, is a great choice for food packaging processing applications since it is FDA- and USDA- approved for use with food.

What is the difference between PBT and PET?

PBT is closely related to other thermoplastic polyesters. Compared to PET, PBT has slightly lower strength and rigidity, slightly better impact resistance and glass transition temperature. PBT and PET are both sensitive to hot water above 60 °C (140 °F).

In some applications, PBT competes with PET. When compared to PET, it has lower strength and rigidity. Yet PBT is more flexible and tougher with a higher impact strength, and it has a lower melting point and crystallizes faster than PET.
