SAFER

The EV charging plug with enhanced fire and electrical safety properties required for fast-charging

New suppliers entering the EV market are producing charging plugs using lower quality materials to drive costs down, which puts other manufacturers under pressure to improve cost efficiency. Yet, low quality materials fail to deliver the aesthetic value that OEMs expect today. They are also unsuitable for producing new fast-charging plugs, which process higher voltage rates and require high-strength materials designed to ensure final parts are safe to handle under any conditions.

First roof crossmember with thermoplastic fiber composite design for convertible soft-top

Fabric roofs for convertibles are highly complex assemblies when it comes to safety, look, and functionality. Designing them is therefore always challenging. The example of the new convertible from a German premium automotive manufacturer illustrates the new opportunities that high-tech thermoplastics open up in the design of such parts. Its fully automatic fabric acoustic soft-top is equipped with a roof crossmember at the front that is made from the lightweight Tepex® and Durethan® structural materials from Envalior. They act as substitutes for magnesium.

We recently launched an industry-first Arnite® PBT compound that achieves a CTI of 600V and UL94-V0 at 0.8mm, as well as hydrolysis resistance. Unlike competing PAs that easily absorb moisture, our Pocan® solution offers a low moisture aborption, which solve the ion migration issues. As a polyester, its orange color remains very stable after long-term aging – unlike PAs prone to discoloration.

We offer a complete portfolio of Pocan® PBT, ForTii® PPA and Xytron™ PPS compounds that ensure UL94-V0 flame retardancy and excellent insulative properties from -40°C up to 180°C. Xytron™ offers high bonding strength

with silicon gels, excellent dimensional stability and creep resistance, and ionic content of less than 50ppm to reduce the risk of electro corrosion.

As the EV market grows, demand for high-quality e-drive lubricants is increasing. Vehicle electrification trends are also changing performance requirements for e-motor oil distribution rings. As electric motors and reduction gears that EVs use become more compact, new energy efficiency, heat removal and speed drive gear oil formulation requirements need to be met. Materials for oil distribution rings need to retain more than 60% of their mechanical performance after oil aging, high dimensional stability and low warpage to minimize the risk of oil leakage. Upcoming EURO VII standards will restrict permissible levels of fine particles. With plastics you mold your part in a one-shot process, whereas Aluminum often needs many production and assembly steps. We work closely with partners, customers and suppliers to realize implement value chains 

that lead to a more sustainable value chain and economiesy. Our high-performance certified circular polyamide Akulon® CRC-MB is made of post-consumer plastics, which would  otherwise be discarded invial and fills or incineratedation. We By lleverageing advanced  recycling processes to convert, used plasticis converted into new feedstock, which then enters  the production chain to delivernew virgin-quality materials. Every year, roughly 650kt offishing  nets are discarded in ocean–equivalent to almost 400,000 vehicles. Akulon® PA6 Re-Purposed is  based made from on recycled fishingernets, which DSM ,together with its partners, is  collectsing from the Indian and Arabian Ooceans. The While being recycle, the performance of  this such compound is comparable tos are almost at the level of virgin PA6. Every year about  650kt off is hernet is discarded in oceans, this is an equivalent of almost 400,000 vehicles that  we be dumped into the oceans every year.

  • Hydrogen Fuel Cells

    Fuel cell systems need to use materials that are pure. If not, ion leaching and hydrolytic and heat aging can occur. These two failure modes and the risks and consequences can hurt your brand image. Impure materials increase the risk of ion leaching, and higher water absorbing materials show more ion leaching, which you do not want. Also, impure materials increase the risk of hydrolytic and heat ageing— PA9T and PA66 are not good performers.

    Body plugs, structural reinforcements and chassis made of Akulon polyamide 6 and Arnitel TPC (TPE-E) make better, safer, lighter, and more cost-efficient cars
